Welcome to Trophy Trout Fishing

When fishing for trophy trout, your first concern is to locate waters capable of producing trophy sized fish. Your state’s or province’s fisheries biologists can provide you with information regarding these waters. Most states have waters managed specifically to provide trophy fishing available to the public.

The next step is to locate (1) the large fish or (2) the habitat that has the capacity to support large fish within the body of water that you have selected to fish . Your gear will need to be suited for the task and in top condition. An accurate, natural presentation of a bait or a lure is critical for success. After the strike, you will need to know how to set the hook, play and land your trophy.

We would be happy to have you share your fishing experiences and post photos of your catch.

Weekly Trout Fishing Tip

A fishhook sharpener is recommended. Even a new fishhook can be dull, so it’s always a good idea to check each hook for sharpness prior to use. Many fish are lost simply because this basic aspect of fishing is overlooked.

Weekly Trout Fishing Tip

Fishing line is the link between you and the fish so it’s imperative that your line is fresh and at its’ maximum strength. It’s also important that the fishing line that you select has a minimum of visibility to the species of fish that you are fishing for taking into consideration the clarity of the water that you are fishing. The less visible the line and the more natural your presentation, the greater are the chances for your fishing success. The same standards apply to leaders and tippet material; fluorocarbon is recommended for its’ stealth and strength.

Weekly Trout Fishing Tip

Fishing with larger lures and bait will produce fewer but larger trout. It’s biologically more efficient for a large fish to injest a few large food items rather than waste energy pursuing numerous small food items. A 36″ long lake trout could easily injest a 12″ long forage fish.

Weekly Trout Fishing Tip

The availability of light plays the primary role in the fish’s ability to detect colors. The less light available, the less the fish will be able to detect red, orange, yellow, green and blue in that order and vice versa. For example, red is an appropriate color for a lure fished shallow under bright conditions. Conversely, a blue lure would be more visible to the trout when there is the least amount of light available. Lures that catch and reflect light offer the best visibility in the depths. Copper and brass lures are most effective on overcast days while nickel and silver lures work well on bright days.

Weekly Trout Fishing Tip

A trilene knot is recommended for most fishing line and leader attachment applications. The trilene knot is a very strong, compact knot that’s easily tied. This knot is strongest when the line is moistened just prior to tightening the knot.

Weekly Trout Fishing Tip

The most productive brook trout fishing takes place in the early morning and in the evening just prior to or at dusk. Subtle changes in the brook trout’s environment, such as an increase or decrease in the water’s temperature, have been determined to accelerate their feeding activity.

Weekly Trout Fishing Tip

Populations of lake trout are often found in large, cold water lakes and, unless you are familiar with the body of water that you are fishing, it’s hit or miss situation to locate them. Frequently a lake trout will not respond to a lure unless it’s placed within a few feet of the fish. Therefore, accurately locating these fish is essential. To ensure a greater degree of success when fishing for lake trout fishing, a fish finder is highly recommended.
